EXPRESSING SYMPATHY

Expressing Sympathy 

                                  

 

Sympathy Expression is an expression or feeling of pity and sorrow when we know and see someone or people are unlucky or have trouble and in bad condition. By sympathy expression we want to show our concern of carefulness for other people’s condition.
We express sympathy expression directly to him / her orally or use a letter or card by post also by short message service (SMS), television, radio, E-mail, and newspaper if he/she who go trouble is from use.
 
Here are some expression of sympathy :
  • I’d like to express my deepest condolences
  • I’m sorry to hear that
  • I’m awfully sorry about…
  • Oh, how awful!
  • Oh, dear!
  • You must be very upset
  • Oh, what a shame
  •  How pity you are!
  • How terrible / awful for you
  Here are some dialogs of expressing sympathy :
    A: I am/was deeply/truly sorry to hear about your grandmother. I understand what you're going   through right now.
    B: Thank you very much. I'm deeply moved/touched.
     
    A: I was sorry/shocked/upset to hear you didn't win the scholarship. I know how disappointed you must feel.
    B: I appreciate your sympathy/kindness. I hope I'll do better next year.
     
    A: How shocking/awful to hear about your accident. Are you OK?
    B: It's very nice/kind of you to be so concerned but really, I'm fine now.
     
    A: Too bad you didn't get the raise. I was hoping you would!
    B: Thanks for your support. Sometimes things don't go the way we want, do they?
